Near the foot of Omiwa Jinja Shrine, this shop was founded 360 years ago. Except during busy hours, the Sando Shop offers sake tasting in which you can taste up to two to three kinds of sake.The sake-flavored ice cream is also delicious.

Omiwa Jinja Shrine is famous for its monaka. This shop goes back over 180 years. Monaka is a sweet made of red bean jam spread between mochi crackers.

草餅/長谷寺周辺

Kusamochi is the specialty of the town that developed around Hasedera Temple. Delicious either grilled or as-is, it’s a sweet made from mochi rice kneaded and infused with mugwort. Snack on one while you stroll around the town outside the temple. Each shop sells a distinctive type of kusamochi. See the photo for reference. Left to right on top row are kusamochi from Hoendo Confectioner, Akataki Sakaeya, and Sohonke Kotobukiya; left to right on the bottom row are from Sohonpo, Shirozakeya, and Inoue Botando.

Yamato Izumo Figurines, Yamatobito no Kokoro Mise

大和出雲人形/やまとびとのこころ店

These rustic, hand-made figurines are crafted one by one by pressing clay into shape with a traditional mold, baking in rice chaff after drying, and painting using a traditional calcium carbonate paint mixed with gelatin. They have their origin with haniwa figures, which were buried in the tombs of ancient emperors.
Inside the shop, you can also enjoy a meal and some tea.

Yoshino Honkuzu

吉野本葛

This starch is produced from the roots of the kudzu vine, native to Japan. A precious ingredient for cooking, it’s been called “white diamonds.”
It can be used as a thickener or in mochi or jellies. Not only is it nutritious, it’s also used as a home cold remedy.
You can find it sold in the Uda Matsuyama area as well as at roadside rest stations in Uda City.
